Directors

K.J. Stafford  is in his twelfth year as band director at Hickory Middle School. His responsibilities include directing the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade bands, jazz band, woodwind choir, percussion ensembles and currently serves as music department chair. K.J. also assists with the Hickory High School marching band, and was the director for the WGI Champion Hickory Concert Ensemble. Under the direction of Mr. Stafford the Hickory Middle School Band has consistently received top ratings at concert band assessment and in 2009, the Hickory Middle School eighth grade band performed at the Virginia Music Educators State Conference in Hot Springs, Virginia.

K.J. earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. While at North Texas, Mr. Stafford studied under Paul Rennick, Christopher Deane, Mark Ford and Dr. Robert Schietroma.  Mr. Stafford was a member of the 2002 PASIC Champion University of North Texas Indoor Drumline.  He has also earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.  

Outside of his work at Hickory Middle School, Mr. Stafford is in demand as an arranger, adjudicator, clinician, designer and instructor with groups throughout the United States.  He has been involved with Drum Corps International for almost two decades, currently serving on the percussion staff of the Santa Clara Vanguard, from Santa Clara, California.  During his tenure, he has earned four Fred Sanford Awards for Best Percussion: 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2017. Mr. Stafford’s professional affiliations include the Percussive Arts Society, MENC, VBODA and VMEA. K.J. endorses Innovative Percussion, Remo Drumheads, as well as Pearl Drum and Adams Percussion.


Zachary Rooksby  is in his seventeenth year as a band director in Chesapeake, VA.  In 2007, he opened and established the band program at Grassfield High School.  Under his direction the Grassfield High School band quickly became known throughout the community and state for its excellence in concert and marching band.  He now serves as band director at Hickory Middle School.   His responsibilities include directing the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade bands, jazz band, woodwind choir and percussion ensembles.   

Mr. Rooksby received his Bachelor’s in Instrumental Music Education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.  There he studied under Bill Rice, Pat Rooney, and Robert McCashin. Mr. Rooksby has served as counselor and instructor at the Bands of America Summer Symposium and the James Madison University Summer Band Camp and has also served as the VBODA Instrumental Representative and VMEA Chair for District IV.  He was a member of the 2000 DCI world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and currently performs as a percussionist with the Virginia Wind Symphony in Norfolk. 

Mr. Rooksby’s affiliations include MENC, VMEA, VBODA, Percussive Art's Society, and the SmartMusic Advocate Program.  He currently resides in Chesapeake, VA with his wife Tara and daughters Julia and Vivian.
